“When Helping Hurts”

Related Learning Resources

When Helping Hurts is an introduction to very complex issues. You are encouraged to dig deeper after reading the book. To assist you in that effort, the Chalmers Center for Economic Development provides the following resources to complement the book:

  1. Self/Group-Study Guide — Study the topics of the book further with additional readings, reflection questions, application questions, and learning exercises in a four-lesson independent study course. This material is appropriate for an individual or a group such as a Sunday school class or a ministry team. There are two separate study guides, one for ministry in an international context and a second for ministry in a US/Canadian context. The study guide is available at no charge. Learn more »

    Access the study guide for:

           •   Ministry Internationally (Africa, Asia, and Latin America)

           •   Ministry in the US/Canada

  2. Webinar — Join live, one-hour webinars (web-based training seminars) that review and expand upon the topics presented in the "When Helping Hurts" book. Each webinar session covers one or more chapters of the book and are facilitated by the authors. You connect to the webinar from your home or office via the Internet and/or by phone.  The presenter’s slides are displayed on your computer in an Internet window.  You hear the audio either through your computer over the Internet or by telephone. There will be an opportunity to submit questions to the presenter(s) in advance of the webinar.

If you are unable to join a live webinar, you can download the recorded webinar session and view it at a time that is more convenient to your schedule.

To be notified about the dates of the webinars, you can subscribe to the Chalmers Center mailing list.

  3. Distance Learning Courses — Participate in a series of Chalmers Center distance learning courses that expand upon the content in the book. Courses are available for those desiring to minister in the Majority World countries of Asia, Africa, and Latin America or for those desiring to minister in the US/Canada.

The Chalmers Center distance learning courses take place in individual lessons that use the Internet to facilitate reading assignments, written work, peer learning through threaded discussions, and various forms of instructor feedback. Learn More »

  4. Christian Economic Development Institutes — A Christian Economic Development Institute (CEDI) provides classroom-style training on multiple Chalmers Center courses during a single 5½ day period. Each day consists of 6 learning hours. Courses are taught through lecture/presentation, group discussion, skits, and simulation/role play. In contrast to distance learning and to group/self-study, a CEDI provides an opportunity to interact "face-to-face" with the trainers and the other participants. CEDIs are held in various locations around the world, hosted and co-sponsored by local, national, and international churches and ministry partners. Learn more »

  5. Chalmers Center E-newsletter — Read articles on key issues related to ministry to the poor and the principles presented in the book. Also, read real-life stories about the impact these principles have had on the lives of individuals, families, and communities. The Chalmers Center newsletter is emailed three times a year and also is available on the Chalmers Center website.
