Christian Economic
Development Institute

A Christian Economic Development Institute (CEDI) provides classroom-style training on multiple Chalmers Center courses during a single 5½ day period. Each day consists of 6 learning hours. Courses are taught through lecture/presentation, group discussion, skits, and simulation/role play.  In contrast to distance learning and to group/self-study, a CEDI provides an opportunity to interact "face-to-face" with the trainers and the other participants.

Courses Offered
CEDIs only offer courses in the International Ministry Track. Currently, the topics covered include Christian Microfinance, Christian Microenterprise Development, and Training Low-Income People in Business, Home, and Health. Click here for a list of courses offered at a CEDI.

During a CEDI each participant takes three of the five courses offered.  All participants take Course #1 and #2 during the first two days of the training.  The skills-based implementation courses, courses #3 – #5, are multi-day elective courses taught simultaneously during the last 3½ days of the training.  Each participant selects and takes only one of these skills-based courses during a CEDI.

Participants should plan to attend the whole training event rather than arrive late or leave early just to participate in one or two courses.

Locations
CEDIs are held in various locations around the world, hosted and co-sponsored by local, national, and international churches and ministry partners.  Since 2003, CEDIs have been held in Ghana, Kenya, the Philippines, Thailand, Uganda, and the USA – eleven countries in total. The most recent CEDI was held in June 2008 in Ghana, West Africa. To read about the Ghana CEDI, refer to the Ghana CEDI article in 2008 - Issue No. 2 of the Chalmers Center Mandate e-newsletter.

Who Should Attend?
This training is designed for those who minister among very poor people who live in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. It is intended for local indigenous pastors and church members, missionaries and international ministry staff, Christian relief and development workers, and US/Canadian churches who minister abroad. Prior financial or economic development experience is not required; however, you will need basic math skills for calculations of incomes, expenses, and savings records. CEDIs are currently conducted in English and therefore you will also need secondary school level English comprehension and verbal skills.

Certification
The Chalmers Center does not offer professional certification or academic credit for completion of its training.  We do provide a course completion certificate upon request.
