Self/Group-study Material

The Chalmers Center offers training in self/group-study format.  This training format is appropriate if:

  1. You prefer the freedom and flexibility to study at your own pace, are self-disciplined and can continue to work through the lessons on you own without outside motivation and accountability.
  2. A group such as a Sunday school class or a ministry team would like to study the Chalmers ministry training material together.

Course Learning Process
Course participants learn primarily through a structure of reading and answering questions:

  1. Readings — Each lesson has required readings from a course text and web accessible material (downloadable Microsoft Word or Adobe .pdf documents, or web pages on the Internet). If you have interest and time, recommended readings are listed for your consideration.
  2. Questions/Assignments — The written assignments consist of questions that challenge you to reflect on the readings and apply them to your ministry/community context. These questions are vital to maximizing your learning in the course. Each lesson has questions that are completed individually and most lessons include group discussion questions to be used for a small group study.

In addition, select courses may also include:

  1. Webinars — Live webinar conferences explore various topics presented in the course. The webinars are hosted and facilitated by Chalmers instructors. With a webinar you can connect from your home or office via the Internet or by phone. There will be limited opportunity for you to ask questions and respond to issues. If you are unable to participate in a Webinar, you will be able to download the audio and video later to view it at your convenience.
  2. Threaded Discussion — This is an online discussion forum in which you dialogue with others who have a similar passion for ministry to the poor and are taking the same self/group-study course. Through threaded discussion, you can participate in peer-learning to gain further understanding and perspective on the topics addressed in the course, post your questions, and share the benefit and insight of your ministry experience.

Refer to the course description or the course syllabus to determine if a particular course offers these additional features.
