They both want to learn how their churches can better minister to people who are poor. Other than that, they couldn’t be more different. He lives in West Africa, one of the poorest regions on the planet. She lives in the U.S., which necessarily means she is one of the richest people ever to walk the face of the earth. The church building in which he worships each Sunday has dirt floors. The church building in which she worships is a stately architectural masterpiece and is considered an historic landmark. Don't Just Study, Do Something! by Gaye Clark

Confession: I hate school. I prefer a hands-on approach. So when our deacons encouraged me to enroll in a Chalmers Center course on poverty, the idea underwhelmed me. The church understood ministry as more education, an in-depth Bible study, or (God forbid) a women’s retreat. No More Band-Aids on Broken Arms by Ben and Chelsea Laudermilch

Our local church board is very godly and discerning, but this particular benevolence need was leaving them at a loss for what to do. A single father, who had recently become a Christian before being released from jail had lost his job and had several medical concerns. The man had been attending the church for a few months and shared that he and his two children were living with his sister and brother-in-law and were in need of housing and financial assistance.
