More on Distance Learning

To review: The Chalmers Center distance learning courses take place in weekly lessons that are facilitated and managed with e-mail and web accessible course material and resources.

Learning Groups
Given the nature of the courses and the benefits of peer learning, we divide our distance learning classes into learning groups.  You will be put into a group with other course participants at the start of the course and during the course you will share your written assignments with the members of your group.  This peer-learning exchange is a key feature of the course. We can place participants from the same church or organization in the same group to facilitate and spark further dialogue among the group about the implications the training has for their ministry.

Written Assignments
The written assignments are vital to maximizing your learning.  They enable you to engage with the readings and apply them to your ministry/community contexts.

As you do the assignments, it will be helpful to have a target group of people in mind.  This should be a group of people in a community you serve or want to serve.  Having people and faces in mind will help the learning become more alive, relevant, and beneficial.

(Due to the highly interactive nature of the training, your email Inbox will receive a lot of email each week from the other participants in your learning group.)

Language
The course material is in English. A secondary-school level of English comprehension and writing skills is required.

Time Investment
There are no set class times, only due dates for weekly reading and assignments.  The length of the courses varies from four to eight weeks depending on the course.  The training goes into depth and, depending on the course, will require an average of 4-8 hours of work per week (longer if English is not your primary language).

Discounts
Discounts are available to a group whose members take a course at the same time.  Also, a discount is available for those indigenous participants taking courses in the International Ministry Track. More on Discounts »

Course Material
Course assignments and readings are deployed using the Internet. In addition, some courses require a text book(s) purchased separately from a book distributor, the cost of which is not included in the course tuition. View the list of separately ordered course material »
